The simplest way to switch to safer products is to find brands or third party certifications you can trust. One of these is OEKO-TEX Certified. This third party certification makes sure that the products are safe and free from harmful chemicals. While you can find this label on all sorts of products like toys and clothes, I have found it the most useful for home goods. Here is a breakdown of the two most common labels you will see.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100:

  • This is the most common label you will find. This means that “…every thread, button and other accessories, has been tested for harmful substances…”

  • Before a garment is allowed to have the label, every single component is tested for safety including threads, buttons, coatings etc.

  • The criteria is updated once a year in to include new studies and data.

OEKO-TEX Made in Green:

  • The Made in Green stamp takes the Standard 100 to the next level making sure it is made in the right way.

  • Not only does it ensure that your products are free of harmful chemicals, but it looks into the manufacturing process as well.

  • Products with this label are made in a sustainable and socially responsible environment.

Why Choose Safer Home Goods?:

  • Textiles like sheets, mattress pads, mattresses, couches, etc. can contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, chlorine, bleach and other harmful ingredients.

  • Normally this is through the dye process or aid in claims like “wrinkle free.”

  • Checking for OEKO-TEX Certified ensures you that the finished product is safe for you and your home.

A couple of weeks ago I needed to get a new mattress pad. I hadn’t replaced ours in a long time, so I got excited when I knew I could find a safer option. I followed my own golden rule to switch to safer when something new is being brought into the home or needs to be replaced. I went to Target and when I flipped the bag over to see what it was made of I saw OEKO-TEX label and knew that I could trust it! HERE is the one I got from Target.

Also on my bed is the Matelasse Coverlet from Parachute which is also OEKO-TEX Certified.
