6 Safer Nursery Picks

6 Safer Nursery Picks

Baby is coming and you are preparing the nursery…where you do you start? This is an area where it is important to prioritize where you want to spend your money. One seal that helped me when I was searching for almost every option below is the Greenguard Gold Certified Seal. They rigorously test products for over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs. Key things to avoid in this nursery are flame retardants, phthalates, BPA’s, formaldehyde, and VOCs. Here are my top 6 areas that I think you should prioritize safer/non-toxic options:

  1. Crib - Remember that baby spends 12-15 hours a day in the crib (sometimes more when they are younger) so it is important to make sure their surroundings are safe. Not to mention that crib will for sure be bitten and licked. To make it simple you can look for solid wood.

    • Pottery Barn has plenty of options here. ( We have the Kendall Crib.)

    • Babyletto (many Greenguard certified options on the site here then you can search on Amazon for names.)

    • Ikea Crib is super affordable!

  2. Mattress: Repeat on the line above about how many hours in the crib. Mattresses are super important (for adults too!). Many can include flame retardants, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), chemical dyes and other treatments. Here are some great options:

  3. Mattress Pad/Protector

  4. Sheets: When in doubt go for 100% organic cotton. Tons of affordable options out there.

  5. Rug: This is where it is worth the extra step to ask and makes sure your rug is flame retardant free.

  6. Changing Pad: (Cannot stress enough the ease of using a non fabric changing pad!)
