Why Gua Sha and what are the top benefits?

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine healing modality that clears stagnation from the tissues and boosts the flow of qi (energy) and blood.  In a nutshell, gua sha increases the health of the tissue and the body as a whole.  The beauty benefits on the face include lifting, sculpting, plumping, and toning the skin.  On the body, it smooths, tightens, and tones while increasing lymphatic flow.

When I met you guys at your Afternoon Retreat event I thought it was so unique how each founder brought something different to the table. How did the three of you decide to partner?

We came together as professionals who were inspired by holistic beauty and wellness.  We each contribute to the brand from a unique angle.  Jill specializes in herbalism and product development, she has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry.   Britta is a holistic esthetician and has done gua sha on literally thousands of faces, she has experience working every kind of skin for the last 20 years.  Gianna is a licensed acupuncturist specializing in facial acupuncture and intuitive healing - gua sha and cupping have always been a few of her favorite modalities because they work instantly.  We decided to partner because we were passionate about offering alternatives to injectables that really work.

Let’s talk about lymph! It has always fascinated me and I love learning about it. What is the role of the lymphatic system and how does Gua Sha and Facial cupping benefit it?

The lymphatic system is, first and foremost, is part of the immune system. The lymph contains white blood cells that help protect against foreign invaders. A third of all lymph in the body is concentrated in the face, head, and neck. Lymph nodes are small, spherical structures that act as lymph filters, catching waste and debris that lymph has picked up, like the little garbage collector it is. The nodes are concentrated in certain areas of the body: The head and neck, armpits, abdomen, breasts, groin, and behind the knees. Some sources say humans have between 500 and 600 of lymph nodes!  One reason gua sha works is because it moves the lymph. This isn’t just any old massage. When it comes to lymph, gentle touch is the way - gua sha and facial cupping are incredible ways to move lymph in the face and neck in order to detoxify the skin and reduce puffiness.

On top of facial and body tools, like cupping and gua sha, you offer oils and tonics. Tell me about how these products are made with “integrity from seed to bottle.”

Jill was inspired to formulate products that are beyond clean when she was pregnant with her first son.  Wildling products are made on organic land, ingredients are grown in native and often wild environments.  One thing that makes us different is that the products are harvested and formulated fresh - we never use dried ingredients or extracts.  Our goal is to bottle the power of whole, fresh plants.  We infuse our Empress Oil for 2 months and infuse it with sunstone under the light of the full moon to promote a positive mindset.  We really go there with our formulas - they are potent, witchy, effective, and incredibly pure.

We never use essential oils - they can irritate the skin and are not eco-friendly.  Zero additives, vegan and always cruelty free.

What do these rituals provide you with besides the physical benefits?

The skin rituals that we teach will help you to look better and feel better.  It can also be a deeply meditative practice and an opportunity for self-care.  At wildling, we think your skin care should be more than skin deep.  We want to enhance your mind, body, and spirit as well.  Facial gua sha will make your skin glow, but it'll also open the flow of energy in your entire body.  In this intense time, we can use self-care to ground us.

People assume that Gua Sha needs to be this rigid routine in the bathroom every single day. What are your tips for keeping it fun?

We don't need another step to do in front of the mirror.  We encourage our customers to keep their Wildling products and tools on their coffee table, rather than in their bathroom cabinet.   Unwind at the end of your day and do gua sha while you watch a movie or just when you can relax and decompress.
